Busy as a Bee

Wow – I feel like I’ve been MIA for a while! Lots going on right now. As I am leaving my job at the end of November, we have hired a new associate who started this week, so the week’s been very busy with training. On top of that, my other co-worker had her baby early so we’re down one person in the department and just trying to figure everything out. It’s been a bit hectic but all seems to be going smoothly – which is great for my sanity!!

I’m so happy today is Friday! And my baby shower is this weekend, so I’m really looking forward to that. Our goal is to have the nursery all set up and ready by November 1 so stay tuned for the big reveal on the blog!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Stylish Skulls

No, this isn’t a Halloween-related post but I have been on a skull kick lately. I realize this may sound a bit morbid to some, but there’s something sort of edgy and fun about them. Skulls have been in fashion for quite a while now, but I do think the Alexander McQueen scarves have set off a new trend.

These scarves are really nice, but I’m not about to spend $300-500 on a neck accessory! So, to satisfy my craving, I’ve compiled some alternatives to achieve a similar look.

I’ve seen so many online – and they’re very inexpensive. Personally, this is not an item I would spend a lot on anyway, b/c let’s face it, I know myself and know how many times (not that many) I’m actually going to wear it.

Home Accessories

I just purchased these DL & Co. journals on Gilt. I love the hot pink color and the embossed gold skull really helps offset it.

These candles have a subtle use of skulls and the bright colors add a bold statement to any room.

Baby Clothes

Most of the clothes I see out there for girls are pink. And while I’ve gotten some really sweet things, there’s only so much pink she can have in her wardrobe! I see skull motifs a lot of times for baby boys – but why can’t girls join in the fun?

These pants are super cute and the subtle design pops out against the dark color.

This little hoodie is perfect for cold days and with the juxtoposition of pink hearts and skulls – I just can’t resist!

What’s your current fashion obsession?

A Haunting Halloween

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I think it stems from being a little kid and having free reign to ask for as much free candy as you like – for just one night of the year! I remember dumping my loot out on the kitchen table and my parents inspecting it, then finding 1 or 2 small pieces in my lunch box for the foreseeable future.

I also love the Fall season and there’s something so perfect about the cool, crisp weather, falling leaves, pumpkins and the like. Here are some decor ideas that I think could make for the perfect Halloween celebration.

I really love the look of white pumpkins – I just think they’re so chic and elegant. So I always pick up a few for the season and they last a fairly long time. This is my own small display:

Here are some fun ways to incorporate skulls into your Halloween display:

These look like Day of the Dead skulls to me, but since the holidays are so close to each other, I think they work perfectly for Halloween as well.

An understated way to add a bit of mystery.

These string lights can help add a soft glow to your Halloween celebration.

What’s on your Halloween decor list?

Five for Friday

Wow – I haven’t written a Five for Friday in quite a while! I guess life got in my way. 🙂  Well, it’s back now, so let’s get right into it.  This week I’m looking forward to the following:

Simon Fashion Now

I’m attending this event/cocktail party/fashion show as part of my local Junior League tonight and it should be a really fun time. You can check here for upcoming dates at a mall near you!

Pumpkin picking

We’re going to my favorite pumpkin patch tomorrow for pumpkins, cider, candy apples and more. Maybe we’ll even have a visit with Otto the Ghost.  🙂

Andy Warhol exhibit

The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently opened a new exhibit called Regarding Warhol that The Husband and I are going to check out on Sunday. I’ve heard some mixed reviews, but should be interesting.

Sunday Funday

After our jaunt to the museum, The Husband wants to go somewhere to watch football (of course). So we’re going back to Doc Watson’s on the Upper East Side – the place of our first official date, and plan to just hang out. I may walk in and out myself and take a stroll around town while he watches the games.

Three day weekend

I’m really looking forward to having Monday off and having a longer weekend. I have no set plans, but that’s the beauty of an extra day off!

Happy Friday!

Signature Scent

Now that there’s a chill in the air, it’s time to retire my summer scents for the season. The problem? I really don’t have a wintery scent and I need to find one.

In the spring and summer I like to wear Acqua di Parma’s Bergamotto di Calabria (which reminds me of my wedding and honeymoon), and Ralph Lauren Blue. Both very crisp, light scents. But I find I’d like something with more weight and depth to it as the weather gets colder. Something with notes of burning wood, amber, incense, spices, etc. I’m not a heavy florals kind of girl and like the more earthy scents.

So I’ve done some research and now need to go seek out these scents in person to find my perfect winter scent!

L’eau Ambree Prada

Prada’s scents seem like they’ve become instant classics. L’eau Ambree combines cedar, rose and amber into a heady, intricate scent.

Diane by Diane von Furstenberg
The designer’s first scent includes notes of myrrh, musk and violets, creating a grown-up fragrance.

Le Labo Oud 27

Always on the cutting edge of scents, Le Labo combines notes of cedar, agarwood, incense and black pepper into this intriguing scent.

Chanel Bois des Iles
This scent was part of the special “Exclusifs” series that came out a few years back. Mixing sandalwood, bourbon vanilla and heady bergamot, it’s a warm and woody fragrance.

Tom Ford Tuscan Leather

Combining saffron, leather, amberwood and black suede, this is an intricately rich scent. A bit on the pricer side but seems like a real contender.

What’s your signature cold weather scent?

Go for the Goal

I’m linking up with Meghan, Lori and Meghan for Go for the Goal. It’s a place to share monthly progress and updates on our goals.

I am really happy to say that September was a very productive month for me! I finally decided to create my own professional freelance writing website and I also added my new freelance status to my LinkenIn account. I’m really proud that I finally got my website up and running. You can check it out here if you like!  😉

I’ve also taken on some more freelance writing jobs – which is the ultimate goal. I have a few in the pipeline for a couple of different publications and another article that was just published today for a new magazine called Number 3.

My last day of office work is November 30 and then it’s on to motherhood and seeing where these other fantastic journeys take me!
