Spring Fling

Last weekend, we were treated to a bit of warm weather in New York. But then it snowed again, and there went that. But it did give me a (short) glimpse into Spring which is making me feel really excited for the warm weather and all of the fun it has to bring. Here are some things I’m personally looking forward to this Spring.

Cherry Blossom Festival

Each year, the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens hosts a cherry blossom festival (Sakura Matsuri) at the end of April. A wonderful afternoon out for the whole family, it’s a great way to experience the fleeting beauty of the cherry blossom trees. It’s also a cultural festival complete with oragami-making demonstrations, Japanese tea ceremonies and taiko drumming.

Our New Home

We are currently in the market for a house and if all goes well, we should be moving in sometime this Spring. I can’t wait to re-decorate and create a beautiful and livable space. My husband jokes that I want our home to look like a high-end hotel, but hey – this is FancyFunction! Yes, I want an amazing space but I also want everyone to feel comfortable in it. And I know I can accomplish just that.

Quick Getaway

All of this constant snow and below-freezing temps have made me a bit nutty. We’re hoping to get away for a few nights to a warm locale – I’m thinking Aruba or Turks and Caicos. If anyone has any suggestions please send them my way!

Fall Foward into Fashion

New York Fashion Week recently wrapped up and there were lots of trends that emerged. I’m not one to follow trends that intently but if I find something I like, I go with it. Here are some favorite looks that I’m coveting for next Fall.

Pale pinks and muted tones are on the forecast for Fall. I think this soft color palette works well for cold weather, especially a warm cashmere sweater, long coat or even a leather bag in a blush tone.

Bold Reds

I don’t wear red that often, but always feel like I should add some more to my wardrobe. I think a red wool skirt paired with a neutral top and stilettos or a fun red knit sweater with a great pair of jeans would be my way to go.

Chunky Knits

I’m a sucker for a chunky, cozy sweater so this is definitely a trend I can get behind.

Dare to Bare

So I’ve mentioned that I’m a fan of trying out new makeup and that certainly includes lipgloss. I’m always looking for that “perfect” gloss – with the right combination of shine, color and lasting-wear. I’m sure there’s no such thing out there but I recently added a new gloss to my collection and I’m really liking it a lot.

By now, Naked by Urban Decay has been all over the place and for a good reason. The products are high-quality and the color palettes are the perfect mix of neutrals. Now Urban Decay has introduced a line called Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss so naturally, I just had to give it a try!

I decided to go with a color called (go figure) Naked. To me, it’s the perfect rosy neutral with just a hint of sheen. It goes on smoothly and with a high-gloss finish. It’s not too sticky, feels light and stays on well. It even has a subtle peppermint scent to it. This may just be my new go-to gloss!

I {Heart} You

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching so I thought I’d share some of the heart-themed items I’m coveting this year. I’m a sucker for hearts, so it’s not just Valentine’s Day that is swaying me. Here are some of my current favorites:

Yet Another Recipe Post

We all know this past Sunday was the Super Bowl. Although our team wasn’t in it, we were happy to see the Seahawks win. We had some friends over to watch the game, and I wanted to make some new dishes.  So I decided to try my hand at chicken wings for the first time as well as try a new dessert – and they were both huge hits!

I saw this recipe on ABC’s The Chew earlier in the week and modified it slightly. In case you’re interested, my modifications were as follows:

Since I didn’t have coconut oil on hand, I used canola, but would go with olive oil next time

I omitted ginger as I’m not a fan of the flavor

Instead of seasoning the chicken with salt and pepper I used garlic powder

I used sweet chili sauce instead of chili flakes

I have to say, these came out great! I would definitely use the recipe again for baking chicken cutlets or thighs.

Sorry for the somewhat blurry pictures! But you get the idea 🙂

I was going to make cupcakes for dessert, but wanted to try something different, so I asked a friend for her cookie bar recipe. This one was super easy, and so good!

You take 1 box of yellow cake mix and combine it with a stick of softened butter. Spread and press evenly onto a cookie sheet. Top with chocolate and butterscotch chips then drizzle with sweetened condensed milk. Bake at 325 for 20 minutes and voila! Again, you can play around with the ingredients, maybe use chocolate cake mix, white chocolate or peanut butter chips, add some nuts, etc. These were so well-liked that I even sent guests home with doggie bags!

So here’s to another successful Super Bowl Sunday. Can’t wait to do it again next year!
