You Say Faux, I Say Fab

Welcome (back)! After some thought, and a little (lot) of help from the Husband, I have decided to revamp this blog a bit. One of the things I love is vintage fashion. Before having kids, i.e., when I had more time, I would browse through vintage stores in NYC checking out all of the one-of-a-kinds finds.

I still like to do it when I can, which is not nearly enough. But hey, priorities! I’m going to feature some fab vintage pieces each week, some from my own collection and many on my wish list.  I’ll also be writing about the other things I love including design and general lifestyle subjects. Leave me a comment to let me know which are some of your favorite pieces. I hope you enjoy what you see!

My first spotlight is on this emerald green jacket with black faux fur trim. Faux fur is having a major fashion moment these days. And for good reason – it’s stylish, sustainable and cruelty-free. I found this beauty about 3 years ago at Screaming Mimi’s, when it was still located down on Lafayette Street. Once I tried it on, I knew I had to have it.

I love how it stands out amongst the sea of black and grey coats out there (of which I own a few). It’s timeless and classic while having a bit of a modern edge. Of course, these days I mainly wear it to school drop-off, but who says moms can’t be stylish too?

Chic Winter Style

We are officially in the thick of a cold, cold winter. But that doesn’t mean we can’t be fashionable while we’re trying to keep warm, right? Here are some of my picks for staying cozy without giving up style.

J. Crew Chateau Parka

OK, so it seems everyone and their mother has this coat, but there’s a good reason – it’s a great coat! Not only is it cute, but it also keeps you warm without the bulk. And I for one am so sick of those black puffy coats anyway! It comes in a ton of color options too. One word of advice – go one size down from your usual size as it’s quite roomy.

Infinity Scarf

Another ubiquitous trend but a necessity. A colorful scarf can make a neutral coat pop! I pair my gray coat with a blue/orange knitted scarf and receive so many compliments – another boost to the system during the cold winter months!

Finally, we all need a stylish and warm pair of boots. And while I am guilty of wearing that pair, there are so many other good choices out there.
How do you keep your sense of style in the cold?

Summer Wardrobe Essentials

The weather in NY is finally getting warm and lovely (here’s hoping it stays like this!) With all of this beautiful weather, it’s made me realize one thing – I need new summer clothes! 😉

But seriously, I am on the hunt for a few new pieces that I think will help make my warm-weather wardrobe complete. In no particular order here are a few of the pieces I’m currently coveting:

Chambray dress

I feel like I’ve been trying to find the perfect one for a few years now with no luck! This Gap dress may do the trick (and it’s on sale now too!)

White flat sandals

Another elusive find for me. I had a fantastic DKNY pair years ago and I was so sad when I had to finally admit they were falling apart and toss them. I haven’t found a pair to live up to them since. But here are some that may fit the bill.

Sleeveless tops

I feel like you can never have too many of these. They’re perfect to wear with jeans or skirts and so easy to layer with a lightweight cardigan when the weather cools down. I’d love some new tops with bright pops of color and bold patterns.

A Pineapple for Me

One of the biggest trends in fashion and home I’m seeing right now is the use of pineapples. Everything from t-shirts and dresses, tabletop decor, art prints and more have colorful pineapples all over them. And this is one trend I can get behind because I’ve loved pineapples for quite a while.

Don’t get me wrong, obviously they’re delicious to eat (I think I ate one per week during my last pregnancy!), but they’re also a really fun and summery way to liven up an outfit or home space.  I remember my grandparents had a small brass pineapple on a side table in their living room, which is where I guess my love first started. When The Husband and I visited Charleston, SC two summers ago, I learned that the pineapple is a symbol of welcoming which is why the motif can be seen at so many home entrances all over the city.

I liked this idea so much that I added a cute pineapple print into my living room’s gallery wall and I really like how it turned out. So, if you want to feel fun and festive, might I suggest adding some pineapples into your life! Here are a few items that I’m currently loving.

Spruce Up Your Winter Look

Sometimes it’s hard to get yourself going on a cold winter morning. But the cold weather is no excuse to not look and feel good! It’s easy to throw on a pair of leggings and hoodie and call it a day (especially if you work/stay home). But with just a bit of effort, you can create an easy and stylish look in just a few minutes extra than it would take to get your sweats on! Here are some items I’m loving right now for that chic and polished look.

I’m a big fan of Bare Escentuals Buxom eye shadow. It’s a creamy, creaseless shadow that has a bit of shimmer to give it that extra pop. Most days I just put on some eyeliner, Buxom in Collie (a neutral shimmer) and a little lip gloss and I’m off! The best thing is, the company donates a portion of sales to Canine Companions for Independence. Look good while doing good!

The Smashbox Wondervision eye set in Flash is fun when I’m looking for a bit more drama. The colors are rich and stay on  very well.

The Husband makes fun of me because he says I’m constantly doing my nails. But I like to change them up! I do like dark, rich colors for Winter but I’m also a fan of bright pops mixed in.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I love chunky, oversized sweaters in the winter. They’re just so cozy! Pair them with some skinny jeans, boots and a great bag and you’re good to go!

Very versatile

To the Max

Today I’m thinking ahead to summer and its fashions. I live in skirts and dresses in the summer because they’re just so comfortable and keep me cool. This year I’m coveting maxi dresses. I think they’re perfect for a variety of activities – work, brunch, casual gatherings, etc. You can wear them with flats, wedges, heels and the shoes and accessories really help change the look.  Here are some of the dresses I can see myself in this summer:

Pink and Green

My new obsession is trying to find pastel pieces to wear this Spring.  I’m currently coveting mint green and pale pink items.  They are somewhat reminiscent of my wedding colors and I think they make such a pretty and classic color combo.  Here are some of the items I’d love to have come Spring:
